So, I haven’t been able to go out at night much since I moved in with my host mom. She doesn’t mind at all if I go out, all she asks is that I text message her if I’m going to be late so she doesn’t worry about me. She’s really nice. However, the bus system which goes back to my apartment stops at 1:00 am, and I really don’t feel comfortable walking home from the bus stop that late by myself. When I have people spend the night, or when I spend the night with other people, it’s so much easier to go out at night because we can walk together.
Anyway, this Thursday, I went out with my friend Steph to one of the bars in Montpellier called O’Caralan’s. How ironic that it is an Irish bar. The night that Steph and I went, we went with a lot of other people in our program for the Quiz Bowl.
It was really funny when we got there because the bartender was asking all of the questions with the microphone, and he was saying them in French and in English. The quiz questions were really hard, and it was funny because all of the French people there really knew the answers. I have my suspicion that they go to this Quiz Bowl every week. Maybe the questions repeat after a while? They are very competitive! I only knew three answers, one of them being the number of band members in The Police.
I had a Guinness (you have to in the Irish bars!) and mingled a bit. I met some really awesome people, and even met one guy who is moving to Chicago after Christmas break. Maybe I will be able to get together with him next semester to keep my French intact. I love making contacts with people here. It’s amazing to think of the number of friends I have made here! Even some that I am sure I will keep in touch with for the rest of ma vie. I think I will go back to a Quiz Bowl on Thursday nights, and maybe I will do some research on the Internet of useless knowledge. I would like to be able to contribute a little bit more the next time I go!
